A 4-day training retreat in Albir, Spain

Syd Banks uncovered Three Principles understanding, said what he said about it, demonstrated that this understanding could have profound effects on people’s lives, but that it would be up to others to take it and run with it.

The spotlight on Three Principles efficacy came about not through counseling and therapy, not from taking it into businesses, not from coaching, but from Dr. Roger Mills pioneering efforts in low-income communities demonstrating outright community transformation and massive changes in residents’ lives. Back in those early days about 50% of all Three Principles efforts stemmed from the astonishing change Dr. Mills realized in the Modello Housing Project, including all subsequent work in schools, in prisons and with parents.

After Dr. Mills passed away so did this emphasis. It is now estimated that only about 1% of all Three Principles activity around the world is focused on being of service to low-income and other such communities.

The purpose of this training retreat …

To revitalize interest and action in this inside-out approach to community change, to reverse this trend (and we applaud those relatively few who have taken it upon themselves to be out there doing this work). Thus, primarily, this training retreat will focus on “How to.”

It will be very interactive and will cover the following topics and more:

  • Grounding in the philosophical approach to creating community change from the inside-out;
  • How to begin in a community;
  • How to make an ongoing community effort even more effective;
  • What is the process or what are the “steps” for inside-out community work and how to make each come about?
  • How to find, identify and encourage community leaders;
  • What to do when unanticipated problems or issues arise during this process?
  • What resources are needed, and what is available to those involved in these efforts?
  • How to know when a project is completed.
  • Get all your questions and concerns answered.

Where does the Retreat take place?

Beautiful Albir!

Situated in a lovely corner of the Costa Blanca, on the coast, and with all the amenities of a small, quiet, yet lively town, Albir is the ideal location for the retreat.  Everything you could need to make this a relaxing, enjoyable and memorable experience can be found within walking distance including the beach, cafes, bars and restaurants, supermarket and a wide variety of shops.

Albir’s beach is called “Playa de Racó de l’Albir” and has received the coveted European Union Blue Ribbon award, annually since 2001 – not a bad recommendation!

A favourite route to walk in the nature park is the ‘Faro’ trail which leads to a lighthouse. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of a dolphin or two as you look down to the sea from the lighthouse.

Meet Your Trainers

Jack Pransky, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized Three Principles trainer, coach, mentor and consultant, having learned directly from its originator, Sydney Banks.

Jack is one of the most widely respected, published authors of Three Principles-based books; for example, Somebody Should Have Told Us! is cited as one of its best introductory books. His book, Modello: A Story of Hope for the Inner City and Beyond received the Martin Luther King Storyteller’s Award for the book best exemplifying King’s vision of “the beloved community.” Paradigm Shift is a history of the Three Principles (all proceeds benefit 3PGC). Seduced by Consciousness and Parenting from the Heart are also widely read books. He also co-authored two children’s picture books: The Power of Thought on Feelings and What is Wisdom (and Where Do I Find It)?

Jack recently created, with Sheela Masand, the Perfecting Deep Listening retreat, now taught in many countries. He has worked in the field of prevention since 1968 in a wide variety of capacities and in 2004 won the Vermont Prevention Pioneer’s Award.

Dr. Pransky now is a semi-retired international Three Principles mentor, trainer and coach.

Diane P. McMillen, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus. I retired in 2017 after 37 joyful years of creating programs and teaching in Human Services.

My longstanding interest in the field of prevention was deepened when I was introduced (30+ years ago) to inside-out prevention, now known as 3 Principles. My teaching, trainings and intervention strategies reflected this understanding and I used it in all of my work. Particularly when helping unravel the effects of traumatic events on individuals and families, and pointing them to see the impact those traumas have on their thinking.

Happily, I continued to teach/consult and provide training for group homes, social services, various community agencies and programs until 2020. I remain involved in various community service and community development projects.

On a more personal note, my other great passions include: a wonderful circle of friends; tending the multiple flower and vegetable gardens planted across the 10 acre yard; riding my bicycle down the country roads that surround my home; live music; and sharing laughter and silliness with my hubby of 52 years.

Liliana Bellini is the co-founder of The Big Simple C.I.C., a social enterprise focused on empowering vulnerable individuals and their support networks. With a diverse background, she has worked with people from various walks of life, including prison inmates, at-risk youth, and those affected by homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges.

From 2016 to 2020, Liliana served as a lead facilitator for Beyond Recovery C.I.C., delivering programs in custodial settings, including co-leading the Knife Crime Prevention Program at HMP Nottingham. Between 2018 and 2024, she co-created and led programs A Slice of Happiness, a mental health initiative supporting home-insecure communities.

As a 3 Principles educator, Liliana is committed to helping individuals realize their inherent wholeness and capacity for peace of mind, regardless of their circumstances. Her work is grounded in kindness and a belief in the transformative power of personal insight.

Outside of her professional life, Liliana enjoys outdoor activities and teaches NIa, a barefoot movement practice promoting holistic health and self-expression.

“I have known Lili for 23 years. Over the past 12 years, we’ve worked together on many different occasions, facilitating groups both in prison and in the community. When I’m facilitating with Lili, I know the work will be easy, relaxed, and fun.

She is highly experienced, and her groups often dive deeply into the understanding we teach, resulting in real, lasting change. Lili has a unique ability to be both direct and loving, which has enabled many people to experience breakthroughs that became powerful catalysts for transformation in their lives.

She is authentic, straightforward, and incredibly generous in sharing her experiences and extensive knowledge with care and integrity.

Lili is a deeply skilled practitioner, and if you feel drawn to work with her, know that you are in very safe hands.”

“Liliana is an exceptional Three Principles practitioner. She genuinely cares about the clients she works with, many of whom are often facing challenges in their lives. It takes someone extraordinary and also ordinary to facilitate large groups with gang members and rivals, in an environment they don’t want to be in, which results in forgiveness and peace for the first time. Liliana has done this countless times and mentors others to do the same. She has supported hundreds of people to make life-changing and life-saving choices.

As a colleague and friend, she brings fun, generosity, and love to life and to the projects she’s involved in.”

“Dr, Diane McMillen is one of the most knowledgeable people I know, first (when I met her) about outside-in social change, social work and prevention, then about inside-out social change, social work and prevention. As a professor at Washburn University she stepped out of her comfort zone to take on Modello and Prevention from the Inside-Out, devoured them, used them as textbooks for her students, lived it with them, got to know the content even better than I did. Being the wild woman she is, her students loved her. No one I know is more passionate about life, social change and justice than Diane. She is also an excellent speaker. I could not have more respect for Dr. Diane.”
